The TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center has released the TIMSS 2019 International Database. This publicly available database contains a rich array of fourth and eighth grade achievement and contextual data from the latest TIMSS cycle to support and promote secondary analyses aimed at improving mathematics and science education. The international database comprises student achievement data and student, home, teacher, school, and national context questionnaire data for the 64 countries and 8 benchmarking systems that participated in TIMSS 2019. For countries that administered the computer-based version of the TIMSS assessments—eTIMSS—the international database also includes process data (primarily timing data) related to students’ actions when responding to mathematics and science achievement items. Across both grades, the database includes records from about 683,000 students, 387,000 parents, 65,000 teachers, 24,000 school principals, and the National Research Coordinators of each participating country.

“The TIMSS 2019 International Database is a great resource for experts and emerging researchers alike,” said Pierre Foy, Director of Sampling, Psychometrics, and Data Analysis at the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center. “Ensuring that our data are transparent and accessible is an important part of our commitment to supporting evidence-based decision-making in education policy.”

The International Database is accompanied by the IEA International Database Analyzer, a downloadable application developed by IEA to facilitate the analyses of TIMSS data as well as data from other large-scale assessments.

Additionally, the TIMSS 2019 User Guide for the International Database is an essential component that describes the database and its supporting documents, and also illustrates potential uses of the IDB Analyzer.

TIMSS 2019 was the seventh cycle of TIMSS since its inception in 1995. Preparations are underway for TIMSS 2023.
